WHERE DO YOU EVEN GET STARTED?

When looking at the different types of jewelry out there and considering pieces to add to your collection, it’s pretty easy to start feeling lost. Between the different styles, different names and different aesthetics available, where do you even get started? If you walk into a necklace shop and aren’t sure what you’re looking for, it’s pretty overwhelming from the start.

We understand your confusion and we’re here to help. For this post, we’re focusing on the differences between necklaces, chokers and chains to help you best understand which pieces are right for you. Keep reading to learn more!

1. WHAT IS A NECKLACE?

Let’s start with the basics. A necklace is a piece of jewelry that can be worn around the neck. Naturally, this type of jewelry comes in a wide variety of styles, ranging from chains and chokers to pearl necklaces and dainty charm necklaces. In other words, both chokers and chains are considered to be necklaces.

2. WHAT IS A CHOKER?

Next up are chokers. A choker is a style of necklace that is worn tightly around the neck either along the skin or along the collarbone. These necklaces come in a variety of styles, such as a star choker or a rose choker, and can be easily layered with other necklace styles.

3. WHAT IS A CHAIN?

Last up is chains. A chain is a type of necklace often found at necklace shops that is typically longer in length. This timeless style is often crafted using precious metals and does not feature any sort of charm or decoration. Rather, chains have more of a minimalist vibe that can work well with other pieces to dress up any look.

4. WHAT ARE THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHOKERS AND CHAINS?

Now that we’ve talked about each piece individually, let’s talk about the key differences between each: the length, the decoration and the aesthetic.

The Length
When looking at chains and chokers, the length is the first distinguishing factor. Chokers are shorter in length, sitting right at the neck or the top of the collarbone. On the other hand, chains are typically much longer, resting atop the neck and collar loosely.

The Decoration
Next up on our list of key differences between chains and chokers is how they are typically decorated. Chokers often feature some sort of charm or pendant, such as a gold star choker, although they can also be minimalist in design. On the other hand, chains are typically sleek and simple, crafted using precious metals with little to no additional decoration. However, some chains do feature accent pieces such as pendants or pearls.

The Aesthetic
The last point of consideration is the overall aesthetic or vibe of each piece. Chokers tend to have an edgier, more modern feel, especially when paired with the right outfit. On the other hand, chains are more versatile and wearable with a variety of styles, from modern to classic, glamorous to streetwear.

Now that you know the differences between necklaces, chokers and chains, it’s time to shop the styles! Here are some of our favorite pieces in our necklace shop for your consideration.
